Rich, high-butterfat milk — perfect for cheesemaking, yogurt, and fresh drinking. Friendly, vocal, and full of personality. Available now from Wann Ranch in Oklahoma, with nationwide delivery to all 50 states.

There is a reason Nubian goats are the most popular dairy goat breed in America. Their rich, creamy milk. Their distinctive long, pendulous ears. Their friendly, talkative personalities. And the way they bond with their owners like no other goat.

At Wann Ranch, we are proud to offer quality Nubian goats to buyers across the country. Whether you are looking for a family milk goat, a foundation doe for a small dairy, or a buck to start your breeding program, we can help.

Why Nubian Goats?

Nubian goats stand out among dairy breeds for several important reasons.

Exceptional milk quality – Nubian milk averages around 5% butterfat — one of the highest of any dairy goat breed. This rich, creamy milk is prized by cheesemakers and homesteaders alike. Higher butterfat means:

  • Richer drinking milk

  • More cheese per gallon

  • Creamier yogurt and ice cream

  • Better butter production

Distinctive appearance – With their long, pendulous ears that hang well below the jaw and their prominent Roman noses, Nubians are unmistakable. They are often described as the most "goat-looking" of all goat breeds.

Friendly, personable temperament – Nubians are known for being vocal, affectionate, and eager to interact with people. They will follow you around the pasture, "talk" to you when they see you coming, and generally make you feel like a beloved member of their herd.

Good milk volume – While not the highest-volume dairy breed (that honor goes to Saanens), Nubian does typically produce 1–2 quarts of milk per day — plenty for a family's needs.

Heat tolerance – Nubians were developed from crosses with African and Indian goats, giving them excellent heat tolerance. They thrive in warm climates where some other dairy breeds struggle.

Nubian Does, Bucks, and Kids: What to Choose

Does (females) are the heart of any dairy operation. A good Nubian doe will produce rich milk for 10 months of the year, then have a 2-month dry period before kidding again. Does can be purchased as:

  • Milking does – Already in milk, giving you immediate production

  • Bred does – Pregnant and due to kid within a few months

  • Open does – Not currently pregnant, ready to be bred on your timeline

  • Doe kids – Young females raised to become your future milkers

Bucks (intact males) are for breeding. A quality Nubian buck can service multiple does and pass on excellent milk production and conformation. Bucks require separate housing from does except during planned breeding.

Wethers (castrated males) make wonderful pets, companions for other livestock, or brush-clearing animals. They do not produce milk but are gentle, friendly, and easy to keep.

Kids (young goats) are the most affordable option. Raise them yourself, bond with them from a young age, and they will be exceptionally gentle when they mature.

Not sure what is right for you? Contact us. We are happy to discuss your goals and help you choose.

Who Are Nubian Goats Best For?

Nubian goats are an excellent fit for a wide range of owners:

Homesteaders – You want fresh, rich milk for your family. A couple of Nubian does will provide plenty of milk for drinking, cheese, yogurt, and butter.

Small dairy operators – You are selling milk, cheese, or soap at farmers markets. Nubian milk's high butterfat makes it ideal for artisan dairy products.

Cheesemakers – The 5% butterfat in Nubian milk means more cheese per gallon and richer flavor in aged cheeses.

First-time goat owners – Nubians are friendly, forgiving, and easy to work with. Their vocal nature means they will let you know when something is wrong — helpful for beginners.

Families with children – Nubians are gentle and enjoy human interaction. Children love their floppy ears and talkative personalities.

4-H and youth projects – Nubians are popular show goats. Their distinctive appearance and friendly temperaments make them excellent project animals.

What Do Nubian Goats Need?

Nubian goats are relatively easy keepers, but they have specific needs:

Fencing – Goats are notorious escape artists. 4–5 foot woven wire or no-climb horse fencing is recommended. Electric fencing can be an effective supplement.

Shelter – A three-sided shed or small barn provides protection from wind, rain, snow, and extreme heat. Goats need a dry place to lie down.

Hay and pasture – Access to good-quality grass hay year-round. Pasture is ideal but not strictly necessary. Goats are browsers, not just grazers — they enjoy eating brush, weeds, and woody plants.

Fresh water – Clean, unfrozen water at all times.

Mineral supplement – Goats need a loose mineral formulated specifically for goats (not for sheep or cattle). Copper is essential for goats but toxic to sheep.

Hoof care – Goat hooves grow continuously and need trimming every 4–8 weeks.

Veterinary care – Annual vaccines, deworming, and routine health checks.

A companion – Goats are herd animals and should never be kept alone. A single goat will be stressed and unhealthy. Plan for at least two.

Nubian Milk: Why Butterfat Matters

Nubian milk averages 5% butterfat, compared to:

  • 3.5% for most other dairy goat breeds (Alpine, Saanen, Toggenburg)

  • 3.5% for Holstein cow milk

  • 5.5% for Jersey cow milk

What does higher butterfat mean for you?

More cheese – A general rule: 10 pounds of milk yields about 1 pound of cheese. But higher butterfat milk produces more cheese per gallon because cheese is essentially concentrated milkfat and protein.

Richer flavor – Butterfat carries flavor. Higher butterfat milk tastes creamier and more satisfying.

Better yogurt and ice cream – High-butterfat milk produces thicker, creamier yogurt and ice cream without adding cream or thickeners.

Easier butter making – More butterfat means more butter per gallon of milk.

For the homestead cheesemaker or dairy enthusiast, Nubian milk is gold.
