There is something magical about alpacas. Their gentle hums, curious eyes, and luxuriously soft fleece have captivated farmers and homesteaders across America. If you have been dreaming of starting your own alpaca herd — whether for fiber, companionship, or breeding — young male cria are an excellent place to begin.
At Wann Ranch, we are proud to offer quality male Huacaya alpaca cria. These young males are healthy, well-socialized, and ready to thrive in their new homes.
What Are Cria and Huacaya Alpacas?
Let us start with the basics for those new to the alpaca world.
Cria (pronounced cree-uh) is the term for a baby alpaca — from birth until weaning at about 5–6 months. Our cria are past the most vulnerable early weeks, fully weaned, eating solid food independently, and ready to transition to new homes without needing their mothers.
Huacaya (pronounced wah-KAI-ya) is one of the two alpaca breeds (the other being Suri). Huacaya alpacas have a dense, crimpy, fluffy fleece that grows perpendicular to the body — think of a living teddy bear. This is the alpaca most people picture when they imagine the species. About 90% of alpacas in North America are Huacaya.
Male cria are young males that can be raised for three different purposes:
Fiber production – Kept intact or castrated, male alpacas produce the same high-quality fleece as females.
Wethers (castrated males) – Castrated males make wonderful, gentle companions. They can be kept with females without breeding and are often the calmest members of the herd.
Herdsires (intact breeding males) – High-quality intact males can be used to breed females and pass on excellent fleece genetics.
When you buy a male cria from Wann Ranch, you have options. We are happy to discuss the best path for your goals.
Why Choose Huacaya Alpacas?
Huacaya alpacas are beloved for excellent reasons:
Incredibly soft fleece – Huacaya fiber is prized for its softness, warmth, and lack of lanolin (making it hypoallergenic). It is often compared to cashmere.
Dense, crimpy texture – The natural crimp (wave) in Huacaya fleece makes it ideal for spinning into yarn.
Wide range of natural colors – Huacaya alpacas come in over 22 recognized natural colors, from white and beige to browns, grays, and true black.
Gentle, manageable temperament – Alpacas are not aggressive. They do not typically bite, kick, or charge. They are curious and generally very safe to be around.
Efficient grazers – Alpacas eat relatively little (about a bale of hay per month per animal) and are easy on pastures.
Male Cria: Multiple Uses for Your Farm
One of the great things about male alpacas is their versatility:
Fiber producers – Both intact males and wethers produce the same beautiful fleece as females. You can shear them annually and spin, felt, or sell the fiber. Many fiber artists specifically seek out male alpaca fleece.
Wethers (companions) – Castrated males are the calmest, most even-tempered alpacas you can own. Wethers can be kept with females (no risk of unwanted breeding) or with other males.
Herdsires – If you purchase a high-quality intact male, he can become the foundation of a breeding program. You can breed him to females, sell his offspring, and build a registered herd over time.

Alpacas Are Herd Animals — Plan for at Least Two
This is the single most important thing to understand before buying alpacas: they must have companions.
A single alpaca will be stressed, anxious, and unhealthy. They need at least one other alpaca (or sometimes another compatible species) to feel safe and thrive.
Your options for companions:
Two or more male cria – Most common arrangement. Two males raised together will be perfectly happy.
One male and one wether – They will get along well.
Male cria with our female alpaca – We also have female Huacaya alpacas for sale.
When you enquire, please let us know if you need one animal or multiple. We can help you select a compatible pair.
What Makes Our Male Cria Different?
At Wann Ranch, our alpaca cria are raised with care and attention:
Raised on Oklahoma pasture – Accustomed to grazing, fresh air, and natural living.
Well-socialized from birth – Handled daily, making them comfortable with human contact and easier to halter train.
Fully vaccinated with complete health records – Every cria leaves with up-to-date vaccinations and thorough documentation.
Weaned and independent – Sold after weaning, ready to transition without needing their mothers.
Available with photos and video – We provide current media on request.
Who Are Male Cria Best For?
Male Huacaya cria are an excellent fit for:
Fiber farmers and fiber artists – Raise your own alpaca fleece for spinning, felting, or selling. Males produce the same high-quality fiber as females, often at a lower purchase price.
Hobby farmers and homesteaders – Enjoy the charm and companionship of alpacas without breeding complexity. Two wethers or two young males are perfect — no breeding, just gentle, fluffy friends.
First-time alpaca owners – Male cria (especially wethers) are recommended for beginners. They are typically calmer than females and less expensive.
Breeders expanding their herds – A high-quality intact male can grow into your future herdsire.
Families with children – Alpacas are safe, gentle, and endlessly entertaining.
What Your Alpacas Will Need
Before bringing male cria home, ensure you have:
Fencing – 4–5 foot woven wire or no-climb horse fencing. Barbed wire is not recommended.
Shelter – A three-sided shed or small barn for protection from weather.
Hay and pasture – Access to good-quality grass hay. A camelid-specific mineral supplement is essential.
Fresh water – Clean, unfrozen water at all times.
Shearing – Once per year, typically in spring.
Veterinary care – Annual vaccines and deworming (alpacas are prone to meningeal worm).
A companion – Never keep a single alpaca. Plan for at least two.
