Why Male Huacaya Alpacas?

Male alpacas are often overlooked by first-time buyers who assume females are the only option. But males offer unique advantages that make them an excellent choice for many operations.

Premium fiber production – Male Huacaya alpacas produce the same dense, crimpy, cloud-like fleece as females — 5–10 pounds of premium fiber at each annual shearing. The fiber is just as soft, just as valuable, and just as sought after by hand-spinners and fiber artists.

Lower purchase price – Males are typically less expensive than breeding-quality females, making them a more affordable entry point for fiber farming.

Multiple options – Male alpacas can serve three different roles:

  • Wethers (castrated) – The calmest, most even-tempered alpacas you can own. Safe to keep with females. Perfect companions and fiber producers.

  • Fiber males (intact) – Kept primarily for their fleece. Cannot be housed with females but produce excellent fiber.

  • Herdsires (intact breeding males) – Quality males used to breed females and pass on exceptional fleece genetics.

No breeding surprises – With wethers, you never have to worry about unexpected pregnancies. With intact males kept separately, breeding is completely intentional.

Long productive lives – Male alpacas can produce quality fiber for 15+ years, making them a long-term investment in your fiber operation.

Huacaya vs. Suri: Why Huacaya?

Huacaya alpacas make up approximately 90% of the alpaca population in North America — and for good reason.

For most fiber farmers and hand-spinners, Huacaya is the preferred choice. The natural crimp makes it easier to spin, and the dense fleece produces higher yields per animal.

What Makes Our Male Huacaya Alpacas Different?

At Wann Ranch, our male alpacas are raised with care, attention, and a focus on quality.

Premium genetics – Our males come from quality bloodlines selected for fiber density, crimp, fineness, and conformation.

Handled daily – From birth, our alpacas are socialized and handled regularly. They are comfortable around people, making them easier to halter train, lead, and shear.

Fully vaccinated with complete health records – Every alpaca leaves Wann Ranch with up-to-date vaccinations and thorough documentation.

Raised on Oklahoma pasture – They are accustomed to grazing, fresh air, and natural living.

Available as wethers, fiber males, or herdsires – Depending on your goals, we can help you select the right animal.

Wethers vs. Fiber Males vs. Herdsires: What Is Right for You?

Wethers (castrated males) are the most common choice for first-time owners and fiber-focused farms. Castration eliminates breeding drive, making wethers exceptionally calm and easy to handle. Wethers can be kept with females without any risk of breeding. They still produce the same premium fiber as intact males. Wethers are the best choice for fiber production and companionship.

Fiber males (intact, non-breeding) are kept primarily for their fleece. They cannot be housed with females (or they will breed), but they produce excellent fiber. They are typically more affordable than herdsires but more expensive than wethers. Fiber males are best for experienced owners with separate facilities.

Herdsires (intact breeding males) are quality males used to breed females and pass on exceptional genetics. Herdsires are the most expensive option but can be a valuable investment for a breeding program. They require separate housing from females except during planned breeding.

Not sure which is right for you? Contact us. We are happy to discuss your goals and help you choose.

Nationwide Delivery: How It Works

Buying alpacas from out of state may feel intimidating, but Wann Ranch makes it simple.

Here is how our delivery process works:

  1. You enquire about available males and let us know your location

  2. We confirm availability and provide a delivery quote (fees vary by distance)

  3. You reserve your alpaca(s) with a deposit

  4. We schedule transport with a professional, licensed livestock hauler experienced with camelids

  5. We prepare all paperwork, including the CVI (health certificate) required for your state

  6. Your alpacas are delivered safely to your farm

Alpacas travel well, especially with a companion. We recommend purchasing at least two alpacas together, as they are herd animals and should never be kept alone.

We have shipped alpacas to buyers across the United States — from California to Maine, Texas to Washington. Our transport network is reliable, and we stay in communication with you every step of the way.

What Do Male Alpacas Need?

Male alpacas are relatively easy keepers, but they have specific requirements:

Fencing – 4–5 foot woven wire or no-climb horse fencing. Alpacas do not challenge fences like goats, but good fencing keeps predators out.

Shelter – A three-sided shed or small barn provides protection from wind, rain, snow, and extreme heat. Alpacas need shade in hot weather.

Hay and pasture – Access to good-quality grass hay year-round. Pasture is ideal but not strictly necessary. Alpacas are efficient grazers.

Fresh water – Clean, unfrozen water at all times.

Mineral supplement – Alpacas need a mineral supplement formulated specifically for camelids (alpacas and llamas). This is essential.

Shearing – Alpacas need to be sheared once per year, typically in spring. You can learn to do this yourself or hire a professional shearer.

Hoof care – Hooves need trimming every 6–8 weeks.

Veterinary care – Annual vaccines and deworming (alpacas are prone to meningeal worm).

A companion – Alpacas are herd animals and should never be kept alone. A single alpaca will be stressed and unhealthy. Plan for at least two.

Who Are Male Huacaya Alpacas Best For?

Male Huacaya alpacas are an excellent fit for a wide range of owners:

Fiber farmers and fiber artists – You want to raise your own premium fleece for spinning, felting, or selling. Male alpacas (especially wethers) produce the same quality fiber as females, often at a lower purchase price.

Hobby farmers and homesteaders – You want the charm and companionship of alpacas without the complexity of breeding. Two wethers are perfect — no breeding, no pregnancies, just gentle, fluffy friends.

First-time alpaca owners – Male wethers are recommended for beginners. They are typically calmer than females and less expensive than breeding-quality animals.

Breeders – If you already have females, a quality herdsire can be the foundation of your breeding program. We can help you select a male with excellent fiber genetics.

Families with children – Alpacas are safe, gentle, and endlessly entertaining. Children love watching them, feeding them treats, and learning to halter train them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wether vs. herdsire — what is the difference?
A wether is castrated — safe to keep with females, a great companion, and still produces excellent fiber. A herdsire is intact — used for breeding, requires separate housing from females except when breeding.

Do males produce good fiber?
Yes — male alpacas produce the same premium Huacaya fiber as females. Expect 5–10 pounds of quality fleece annually from a healthy, well-fed male.

Can I keep a male with my females?
Wethers can be kept safely with females. Intact males must be housed separately except during intentional breeding.

How does nationwide delivery work?
We arrange professional transport to your location. Alpacas travel well, especially with a companion. We handle all documentation, including the CVI required for interstate transport.

Can I buy just one alpaca?
We strongly recommend purchasing at least two. Alpacas are herd animals and should never be kept alone. A single alpaca will be stressed and unhealthy.

What colors are available?
We have male Huacaya alpacas in a range of natural colors. Contact us for current availability and color options.

Are your males registered?
Registration status varies by animal. Contact us for details on currently available males.

Can I visit the ranch before buying?
Yes — farm visits are welcome by appointment. Come see Wann Ranch, meet our alpaca herd, and see our operation firsthand.

Chase

Chase is a sweet little man who is the offspring of Crescent Moon’s Accoyo Vincentia and Pronking Acres Edison. But more importantly, Chase is full of fiber and personality!

When Chase’s dam Vincentia was preparing for birth a stray cat walked behind the alpaca paddock and all the lady alpacas started to alarm. Because of this “alarm call”, Chase’s mother decided it was not safe to deliver her baby. She halted the process only to deliver in a panic late that evening. Thankfully, we caught the late delivery and we were able to intervene. The complicated birth contributed to Vincentia rejecting Chase as a baby. She rarely fed him and we humans had to step in to assist. At the time, our family had our fifteen year old son actively involved in the farm and Chase became his special project. Hunter would make sure Chase was well taken care of and properly fed. This continued activity led to a very strong bond between Chase and Hunter.

Fast forward a few years and Chase is the rock star of the 4-H fair and competitions. He and Hunter dominated obstacle and pack competitions year after year. Why? Because a teenage boy put the time and work into saving a helpless baby and together they formed a magical bond filled with love and respect. Alpacas are loyal creatures and Chase’s loyalties will always reside with Hunter.

Today Chase is our resident talker who enjoys mingling with visitors, begging for snacks, taking selfies, and being the primary goofball of our young male paddock. He is one of a kind!
