Mini Jersey Heifer for Sale: Start Your Homestead Dairy the Right Way

A young female Miniature Jersey — raise her, bond with her, and she will reward you with rich, creamy milk for years to come. Available now at Wann Ranch in Oklahoma.

There is something deeply satisfying about walking to your own barn each morning and milking your own cow. The cream for your coffee, the butter for your toast, the milk for your cereal — all from an animal you raised yourself.

At Wann Ranch, we believe the best way to start that journey is with a Mini Jersey heifer. A young female that has not yet calved gives you time to prepare, to bond, and to learn — before the milk ever flows.

What Is a Mini Jersey Heifer?

Let us break down the terms.

Heifer (pronounced HEFF-er) is the term for a young female cow that has not yet given birth to a calf. Heifers are typically under two to three years old.

Mini Jersey is exactly what it sounds like — a smaller version of the beloved Jersey breed, scaled down to about half the size but retaining all the rich milk, gentle disposition, and golden coloring of the full-sized Jersey.

When you buy a Mini Jersey heifer, you are getting:

  • A young animal with her whole productive life ahead of her

  • Time to prepare your facilities before she comes into milk

  • The opportunity to bond with her from an early age

  • A cow that will be exceptionally gentle because you raised her

When she calves for the first time (typically around two years old), she will begin producing 1–2 gallons of milk per day — rich, golden milk with 5–6% butterfat.

Why Start with a Heifer Instead of a Milking Cow?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from first-time dairy owners.

Buying a fresh cow (already milking) gives you milk immediately. There is no waiting. But you are also buying an animal you do not know. She has her own habits, her own quirks, and her own relationship history with her previous owner. Transitioning an adult cow to a new home and a new milker can be stressful — for both of you.

Buying a heifer means you wait longer for milk — typically 6–18 months depending on her age and breeding status. But in exchange, you get:

  • Time to learn – You can practice halter training, leading, and daily handling without the pressure of milking.

  • A stronger bond – Animals you raise yourself trust you more deeply. Your heifer will know your voice, your touch, and your routines.

  • Gentler behavior – A heifer raised with kind handling will be calmer and easier to milk than an adult cow with unknown history.

  • Better value – Heifers are typically less expensive than fresh cows.

For most first-time homesteaders, a heifer is the better choice.

The Mini Jersey Advantage

Jerseys have long been prized by dairy farmers for their rich, high-butterfat milk — often called "golden milk" for its creamy color. But full-sized Jerseys are large animals, weighing 800–1,200 pounds.

Mini Jerseys offer all the same benefits in a smaller package:

  • Compact size – Mature Mini Jerseys typically stand 36–42 inches at the shoulder and weigh 400–600 pounds. They require less pasture, less feed, and less fencing than standard cattle.

  • Rich, creamy milk – 5–6% butterfat, compared to 3.5% for Holsteins. This milk is ideal for butter, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and cream.

  • Gentle temperament – Jerseys are known for being docile, curious, and people-oriented. Mini Jerseys are even more manageable due to their size.

  • Efficient grazers – Mini Jerseys convert feed to milk efficiently, making them economical to keep even on smaller acreage.

  • Beautiful appearance – Their fawn-colored coats, large dark eyes, and sweet expressions make them as beautiful as they are functional.

When in full production, a Mini Jersey produces 1–2 gallons per day — enough for a family's drinking milk, cooking, and dairy projects, without the overwhelming volume of a Holstein.

Who Is a Mini Jersey Heifer Best For?

Mini Jersey heifers are an excellent fit for a wide range of owners:

First-time dairy owners – You have never owned a cow before. You want something gentle, manageable, and forgiving of beginner mistakes. A Mini Jersey heifer is perfect.

Homesteaders – You want fresh, rich milk for your family. You have a few acres and want a cow that fits your property. Mini Jerseys are efficient and compact.

Families with children – Mini Jerseys are gentle and safe around kids. Children can help with feeding, leading, and eventually milking.

Small-acreage owners – With just 1–2 acres of good pasture, you can keep a Mini Jersey comfortably.

Retirees – You want the satisfaction of a productive cow without the physical demands of a full-sized animal.

If you are not sure whether a heifer or a fresh cow is right for you, contact us. We are happy to talk through your goals and timeline.

The Timeline: From Heifer to Milk Cow

Here is what to expect when you bring home a Mini Jersey heifer:

Step 1 – Bring her home – She is young, playful, and curious. Focus on halter training, leading, and daily handling. No milking yet — just bonding.

Step 2 – Prepare for breeding – Heifers are typically bred around 12–15 months of age, once they reach about 65% of their mature weight.

Step 3 – Gestation – The pregnancy lasts approximately 9 months (283 days). During this time, continue handling her gently. She will need increased nutrition in the final trimester.

Step 4 – Calving – She gives birth to her first calf. This is an exciting (and slightly nerve-wracking) event. We can advise you on what to expect.

Step 5 – Milk! – After calving, she begins producing milk. You can milk her once or twice daily, sharing milk with her calf or bottle-raising the calf separately.

From there, you can rebreed her each year to keep her in milk (cows typically produce for about 10 months, then have a 2-month dry period before the next calf).

What Your Heifer Will Need From You

Before bringing a Mini Jersey heifer home, ensure you are prepared:

  • Fencing – 4–5 foot secure fencing. Woven wire or high-tensile electric works well. Jerseys are generally not escape artists, but good fencing is essential.

  • Shelter – A three-sided shed or small barn for protection from wind, rain, snow, and extreme heat.

  • Hay and pasture – Access to good-quality grass hay year-round. Pasture is ideal. A mineral supplement formulated for dairy cattle is essential.

  • Fresh water – Clean, unfrozen water at all times. A cow will drink 10–20 gallons per day.

  • Milking equipment – When she freshens, you will need a milking stanchion, milk buckets, filters, and storage containers. A milking machine is helpful but not required for a single cow.

  • A companion – Cattle are herd animals. A single heifer will be lonely and stressed. Plan to have at least two animals — another heifer, a steer, or a goat. We have goats for sale and sheep and ewes for sale that make excellent companions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is she bred or open?
Contact us for current breeding status and timeline for first milk production. We have both open heifers and bred heifers depending on availability.

When does a heifer start producing milk?
After her first calving — typically around 2 years old. From then, she will produce 1–2 gallons of rich milk daily for approximately 10 months of the year.

Heifer or fresh cow — which is better for a beginner?
A fresh cow gives milk immediately. A heifer lets you bond with the animal from a young age. We typically recommend a heifer for first-time owners because you have time to learn before milking begins. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.

How much land does a Mini Jersey need?
Approximately ½ to 1 acre of good pasture per animal. They can also thrive on dry lots with hay if pasture is limited.

What do Mini Jerseys eat?
Good-quality grass hay is the foundation. If pasture is available, they will graze happily. Supplement with a dairy mineral block. We also offer alfalfa hay for sale.

Can she be delivered nationwide?
Yes — Wann Ranch offers nationwide delivery to all 50 states through professional livestock transport. We handle all health certificates (CVI) required for interstate transport.
